About
Italy is the third-largest economy in the euro-zone (1). The Italian economy is driven in large part by the manufacture of high-quality consumer goods produced by small and medium-sized enterprises, many of them family-owned (1). Milan is the principal commercial center (4).

Italy’s natural resources include coal, mercury, zinc, potash, marble, barite, asbestos, pumice, fluorspar, feldspar, sulfur, natural gas and crude oil reserves, fish, arable land (2). Its economy is structured as followed (in % of GDP): services 73.9%, industry 23.9% and agriculture 2.1% (2017) (13).

Italy’s agriculture products include vegetables, grapes, potatoes, oranges, apples, sugar beets, soybeans, grain, olives, beef, dairy products, fish, wheat, corn, tomatoes, barley, and rice (3;4).

In addition, Italy produced antimony oxides, gold, mine lead, mine manganese, bromine, crude clays, diatomite, gypsum, lime, nitrogen, perlite, mineral pigments, salt, sand and gravel, soda ash, sodium sulfate, stone, sulfur, and talc (4).

Italy’s industries include tourism, machinery, iron and steel, chemicals, food processing, textiles, motor vehicles, clothing, footwear, ceramics (3).

Italy’s top exports commodities include machinery including computers, vehicles, electrical machinery, equipment, pharmaceuticals, plastics, plastic articles, mineral fuels including oil, articles of iron or steel, furniture, bedding, lighting, signs, prefab buildings, clothing, and accessories. (14). Its top imports commodities include mineral fuels including oil, vehicles, machinery including computers, electrical machinery, equipment, pharmaceuticals, iron, steel, plastics, plastic articles, organic chemicals, optical, technical, medical apparatus, gems, precious metals (14).

Italy’s main ports and terminals are:  Augusta, Cagliari, Genoa, Livorno, Taranto, Trieste, and Venice (1).
