Graduated in Political Science and Public Administration from Iberoamericana University, he has a background in International Relations at the UNAM; Public Finance at the University of Berkeley, California, Communication Sciences at the CECC and the Christian Social Doctrine IMDOSOC.

2006-2012 - Governor of the State of Chiapas in Mexico
2005-2006 - Mayor of the City of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Capital of Chiapas.
2001-2004 - Local Deputy for Tuxtla Gutierrez

International Awards and Decorations

The Order "José Cecilio del Valle", by the Government of the Republic of Honduras, in rank of Grand Cross Silver Plaque in recognition of his work in favor of human rights of Central American migrants.

"Orden del Quetzal" Degree Grand Cross by the Government of the Republic of Guatemala.

He received the Government of El Salvador's National Order Award "Jose Matias Delgado in the Grade of Grand Cross Silver Plaque", the highest distinction granted to foreign citizens in that country.

On February 10, 2011, Juan Sabines received the title "Noble Friend of El Salvador" from the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Salvador, in recognition of his work to restore and protect the human rights of migrant Salvadorans transiting or residing in Chiapas, Mexico.

He received from the Ambassador of Denmark, the Order of Dannebrog, which the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark gave for his actions "vision and zeal for the civil servant, which was spared any pain to the State".

The United Nations System in Mexico on October 2010 presented the award "Most United Nations in Mexico," for the progress and efforts to fulfill the Millennium Development Goals that apply in Chiapas.

The American Chamber of Commerce Mexico gave him an appreciation for the Promotion of Development and Commercial Exchange.
